Luzern and Surroundings

Luzern and Surroundings

We arrived via train in Luzern and finally found our Airbnb home. There was road construction going on in the area which made things a little more difficult than usual, but we arrived in good enough time to take off to go up Mt. Pilatus. The weather has been very cloudy and rainy the last few days so it wasn’t the best day to go up but we thought we would give it a try. We took the boat on Lake Lucerne to another town where we caught the steepest cog railway in Switzerland that took us to the top of the mountain. We had hoped to do some hiking on the mountain but you could barely see ten feet in front of you so scratched that part of the day. We walked around a little, had some hot chocolate since it was pretty cold up there, even had some snow on the ground, and then took the gondola down to catch a bus back to Luzern.

This time of year the weather is very unpredictable, according to the locals. I guess we just hit a bad day weather- wise, but we still enjoyed it. What scenery we could see was lovely; the fall colors, the very green mountain pastures with farm homes scattered throughout and even down to the cows grazing in the valley with their bells clanging with each chew. It was all “Heidiesque” and beautiful.

After we got back to town we started exploring the old town and put quite a few miles on the old feet. We saw some old wooden covered bridges and cobblestone streets as well as parts of the old city walls, built in 1386. After we were done exploring, we went back to where we were staying and had bread, cheese and nice conversation with our hosts. We feel slightly more knowledgeable about the Swiss culture.

Now, it’s off to bed. Tomorrow we head to Ringgenberg and Leissigen to check out Roger’s roots.
