Basel

Basel

After arriving by train, we spent today walking around Basel, taking a ride on an old cable ferry across the Rhine, seeing another old church, which they call the Munster, checking out the old town (which isn’t quite as charming as Bern’s) with the old gate, the Rathaus (town hall) and riding the trams. The trams are pretty cool and everywhere over here. It’s the mode of transport for many of the people. Public transport is top- notch and dependable. I’m not sure how people drive, walk and bike (mostly without helmets) without getting into accidents. It is kind of a free-for-all.

I forgot to mention that we stopped and bought some freshly roasted chestnuts while we were walking. I think that they might be an acquired taste but they weren’t too bad. The bag they gave us when we purchased them was cute . . . two pockets, one for the shells and one for the uneaten nuts. Pretty clever.

Basel is a town filled with museums and all kinds of art but the museums are all closed on Mondays, so no museums for us. Next time I’ll have to do my homework better or we need to stay in a place longer than one day.

We were able to see the Tinguely Fountain, which is composed of all kinds of junk made into creative art resulting in many quirky machines spewing forth water. Very inventive.

We are staying in a small hotel for the night. We have a windowless room which reminds me of a tiny house. It’s bigger than the room we had in Hong Kong and is ultra-modern with touches of orange (my favorite color) everywhere. The building, itself, is very old.

A side note, as we were checking in, the receptionist said, “Oh, it’s your birthday.” After I acknowledged that it was, Roger looked at me with this puzzled and embarrassed look. Evidently, he had forgotten. It’s easy to lose track of time as we are on the move all the time.  No worries. I’m enjoying one big birthday celebration. On to Zurich tomorrow.
