Zurich in a Day

October 13,2015

We took the fast train to Zurich this morning. The ride was so quiet and smooth, unlike most of the Amtrak trains that we have experienced. The USA could definitely take some lessons on train travel from this side of the pond. They definitely have it down to a science. Of course, you are dealing with a lot less territory, too. Anyway, train travel is enjoyable here in Switzerland.

After our arrival, we ate lunch at the train station by trying their hot dogs. They are more of a sausage type and placed in a bun that isn’t as soft as our hot dog bun. Not bad, even plain, which is how they are eaten here.

We then went to our hotel, which is another Easy Hotel, small, budget friendly and accented with a lot of orange, down to the bathroom sink and floor. I think it’s cute and functional This place is super sleek, modern and clean. Tomorrow night it’s back to Airbnb.

Today was rather dreary and rainy so it wasn’t quite as much fun walking all those miles around the old town of Zurich. That part of town has a Dickens’ air to it, again with cobblestone lanes and hills. Zurich is much hillier than Basel. We did try some crepes and a pretzel covered with sunflower seeds . . . both very tasty.

On our walk we visited two churches, the Fraumunster and the Grossmunster. The former had beautiful stained-glass windows by Chagall. The later was founded by Charlemagne in the 9th century and it was where Zwingli helped bring about the Reformation to Zurich. There was someone playing the huge organ at the Grossmunster which made me a very happy walker.

We hoped to get a better view of Lake Zurich but the weather wasn’t very cooperative by that point. We were able to see some swans and sailboats and a general view of the lake.

As we were walking, part of our tour took us down the Niederdorf, the Michigan Ave of Zurich. We window-shopped and kept walking.

For supper tonight we found a little restaurant close by to where we are staying and filled up on some good Middle Eastern food. We are satisfied. Now, it is off to bed so we can do this this all again tomorrow in Luzern.
